Symbols of Bursa 2

Iznik Lefke Door

The arched gate structure belonging to the Roman period is identical to the Istanbul Gate both in terms of its dimensions and construction features. The architrave and frieze have both Plancius’ and Hadrian’s construction inscriptions on the inner and outer faces.

This building, organised with a courtyard system fortified by two round towers, and the Istanbul Gate share similar features.

The Turkish fountain built adjacent to the gate conveyed water brought by aqueducts from a spring 800 metres to the east, which had been used since Roman and Byzantine times.

Yenişehir Clock Tower

The octagonal clock tower rising on the Cumhuriyet Square is made of rectangular cut stone and reaches a height of 25 metres with 7 floors on its 2.5 metre high pedestal. The tower, which is said to have been repaired by melting the weapons and iron parts obtained after the liberation of Yenişehir from the Greek occupation, is also known as a kind of victory tower. On the 6th floor of the tower, which is stated to have been built in the 30th year of Sultan Abdülhamit II’s accession to the throne (1906), there is a clock facing four sides. The clock machine, which works with a weight system, is signed by Osman Nuri Körüstan, a watchmaker from Bursa. The dome of the attic floor, which is open on all sides for its sound to be heard comfortably and rests on two columns at the four corners, is covered with lead.

Hagia Sophia Orhan Mosque

The building, whose inscription has not survived to the present day, is thought to have been built between the 4th-8th centuries. According to the suggestions generally approved in the sources, the construction phases of the building are evaluated in three periods. 1st Phase: 5th-6th century; 2nd Phase: Changes after the 1065 earthquake; Phase 3: Ottoman Period after 1331.

As the meeting place of the 7th Council (24 September 787), it has an important place in the history of Christianity. The building has a rectangular plan in the east-west direction with three naves. There is also a chapel adjacent to the building in the south-east. It was probably built on a Roman structure that was previously located here.

There are traces of frescoes on the inside of the window arches of the pastophorium cells (closed spaces to the north and south of the apse), between the arches, on the pendants and on the walls. In addition to the geometrically patterned floor mosaic unearthed during the excavation in the apse section, a floor mosaic in the opussectile technique was found during the cleaning work carried out inside the building in 1955.

Merinos Atatürk Congress and Culture Centre

Atatürk Congress and Culture Centre, which was built on the site of Merinos Yarn Factory, which was inaugurated by Atatürk in 1938 within the framework of Turkey’s first industrialisation initiatives and made Bursa the textile capital, hosts national and international congresses as the largest congress and culture centre of Bursa.

With a capacity of 1659 seats and two balconies, Osman Gazi Hall has an electronic, mechanical and acoustic infrastructure that will allow the most comprehensive organisations from opera, theatre and ballet performances to conferences and concerts. The hall is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including a 1750 m2 stage area, movable and sliding stages, a movable orchestra pit, simultaneous translation rooms and all kinds of technical spaces. In the administrative section, there are the necessary artist dressing and working rooms, workshops, rehearsal rooms, offices, library, archive and private car parking area to support this technology. Spread over an area of 3,800 m2, the main and side foyers integrate with both the lush green nature of Merinos Park and the restored Merinos Factory thanks to the completely transparent facade. These spaces, enriched with large gallery spaces, are also used as recording, exhibition, stand and catering areas.
